BMW national teams aim to close points gap in Japan.

  • Press Release

Munich, 26th October 2009. The 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship is approaching the finish line. This weekend sees the BMW national teams contest rounds 21 and 22 in Okayama (JP), with the final two races being hosted three weeks later by the Guia Circuit in Macau (CN).

In order to take the fight to the last round, the BMW drivers need strong results in Japan. BMW Team Germany’s Augusto Farfus (BR) lies third in the drivers’ classification with 91 points, a deficit of 18 points on championship leader Gabriele Tarquini (IT/SEAT).In the Manufacturers’ Championship BMW has 250 points, 21 less than SEAT.

Also on the weekend’s programme are races for the new Asian Le Mans Series, which makes its debut at Okayama. The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team has entered a BMW M3 GT2 for both three-hour races. Tommy Milner (US) and Dirk Müller (DE), who have experience of the car from American Le Mans Series events, will be at the wheel of the GT sports car. In addition, Formula BMW Pacific will stage its 13th and 14th rounds of the season in Japan, completing the strong line-up for BMW this weekend.

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“The fans in Japan certainly appreciate touring car racing, which creates a very special atmosphere. Last year a fan even painted his BMW M3 in our BMW Team UK colours, which was impressive. That weekend was a lot of fun.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I certainly enjoyed the first race in Okayama in 2008. Unfortunately my rain tyres went off, which meant I had to let Rickard Rydell through. However, the podium place was a consolation. The fans in Japan are unique. I really enjoy the friendliness of the people in Japan.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“The hospitality which we enjoyed last year in Okayama was fantastic. Now that the fans know our championship they will hopefully be even more enthusiastic. Obviously for me this is an important weekend. I have nothing to lose, so will be in full attack mode.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“Were it not for the track’s very slippery surface, then I would probably love it. I like to brake late, then let the car roll into the corner and use understeer to calm the car down. However, in Okayama that does not work well. Despite this I am hoping for a good result in order to justify the long journey. Last weekend I scored my maiden hand bike win at the Venice Marathon. It would be nice to keep this positive trend.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I will always remember Okayama because it was there that I stood on a podium for the first time in my WTCC career – and hopefully not for the last time. As a driver it is possible to concentrate fully on the race as there is nothing around the circuit to distract us. The circuit is varied and offers all types of corners.”

Dirk Müller (BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team):
“I’m really looking forward to our appearance with the BMW M3 GT2 in the Asian Le Mans Series. The field in the GT2 category looks strong – so it will be far from easy to win. BMW has a very high presence in Okayama this year. I will keep my fingers crossed for my fellow BMW drivers in the WTCC and look forward to watching the Formula BMW Pacific youngsters in action. This promises to be a great weekend.”

History and background:
Last year Okayama made its debut on the World Touring Car Championship calendar, with four BMW drivers making it to the podium: Jörg Müller finished the first race, held on a wet track, in second place, followed closely by Andy Priaulx; on a drying surface, Augusto Farfus amassed eight points in the second race with second place, while Sergio Hernández took third.

The “Okayama International Circuit” is named after the Japanese region of the same name. The city of Okayama is situated sixty kilometres to the south, with the circuit actually falling within Mimasaka, which was only founded in 2005 after the amalgamation of numerous communities.

The race track was built in 1992 as the “Tanaka International Circuit Aida”. It changed hands in 2003, with the renaming following on 1st May 2004. Beside the WTCC, the 3.703-kilometre circuit hosts Japanese Formula 3 as well as various national sports and touring car championships.

Last year’s WTCC races were the first official FIA events at the OIC for 13 years. In 1994 and 1995 the circuit hosted two Formula One Grands Prix. Both Pacific Grand Prix races were won by Michael Schumacher (DE).

Dirk Müller and Andy Priaulx experienced the BMW M3 GT2 on 17th October, scoring a podium place in only the new car’s second race in Europe. The BMW works drivers finished second in the ninth round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

Both WTCC rounds will be contested over 14 laps, equating to a distance of 51.84 kilometres. On Sunday the first race starts at 13:55hrs local time (04:55hrs GMT), with the second getting underway at 16:05hrs (07:05hrs GMT).

BMW drivers Priaulx and Müller narrowly miss out on pole position.

  • 31.10.2009
  • Press Release

Okayama, 31st October 2009. In qualifying for round 21 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) and Jörg Müller (DE) of BMW Team Germany missed out on pole position by fractions of a second. Priaulx set a lap time of 1:37.716 minutes to finish second, just 0.050 seconds behind SEAT’s Gabriele Tarquini (IT), who will start the first of the two races on Sunday from first place. Müller on his part was only one hundredth of a second slower than his fellow BMW driver. He will start from third on the grid.

Augusto Farfus (BR), who is the only BMW driver still in with a chance of winning the drivers’ title, came fifth for BMW Team Germany. Sergio Hernández (ES), however, was eliminated in the first phase of qualifying after finishing 11th. Alessandro Zanardi (IT), also racing for BMW Team Italy-Spain, also missed “Q2” and set the 16th-fastest lap.

“This has been a tough qualifying,” said Priaulx. “I don’t know how often I have missed pole position by only a small margin this year. But of course it’s great to start up front. In free practice I wasn’t happy with my car, but the changes we made before qualifying worked well. If it rains on Sunday, as predicted, we will see two complicated races. I want to finish the season on a high and score maximum points tomorrow.”

Priaulx finished third in “Q1”, easily advancing into the second part. Farfus came eighth and also made it into the top-ten shoot-out. Fastest man of the first 20-minute session, however, was Müller. He said: “On my decisive flying lap I hit some traffic. All the cars let me go past, but still this possibly cost me some time. My car was perfect from the very beginning here in Okayama. This helps to get you into a good rhythm, in order to make the most of it. I will give my all tomorrow to support BMW in the title fight.”

Farfus, currently ranked third in the Drivers’ Championship, was not satisfied with his qualifying result, but still hopes for two successful races on Sunday. The Brazilian commented: “Obviously it was our goal to be in pole position, just as was the case last year. But we are still in the game. Should the rain really come on Sunday, it might shake up the whole field. Twenty-eight race laps are ahead of us – and I’m fired up to gain some ground.”

BMW celebrates a double one-two in Japanese WTCC races.

  • 01.11.2009
  • Press Release

Okayama, 1st November 2009. Andy Priaulx (GB) and Augusto Farfus (BR) scored wins for BMW in rounds 21 and 22 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. Both races in Okayama (JP) were held in the wet, and Priaulx claimed victory for BMW Team UK in the first one. BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) made it a one-two, finishing second ahead of Chevrolet driver Robert Huff (GB). In race two the BMW 320si WTCC cars again dominated proceedings in the rain, when Farfus made perfect use of pole position to score his fifth win of the season. Priaulx increased his points’ tally of the weekend to 18 by coming second. Third-placed Yvan Muller (FR/SEAT) joined the two BMW drivers on the podium. For BMW these were the fifth and sixth one-twos of the year.

In the Drivers’ Championship Farfus successfully reduced the gap to the front-runners. He has 102 points and lies 11 points in arrears of Muller, while his points’ gap to leader Gabriele Tarquini (IT/SEAT) is 13. Also in the Manufacturers’ Championship the title will only be decided in the season finale, which is staged in Macau (CN) on 22nd November. With 286 points BMW is just three points adrift of SEAT.

The weather forecast for Sunday said rain – and this prediction turned out to be perfectly correct. Shortly before the start of race one heavy rain set in. The Race Director therefore opted for a start under safety-car conditions. After two laps the race finally got underway. How difficult conditions at the 3.703-kilometre track really were was proved as early as the opening lap. Tarquini had an off-track moment and dropped back, moments later Farfus suffered the same misfortune at the same place. Hernández was involved in an accident and was forced to retire after only a few metres. Priaulx, on the other hand, took over the lead from Tarquini and, together with Müller, quickly opened up a gap on the rest of the field.

Farfus fought hard for his chance to secure at least one point and pole position for race two by making it to eighth. One lap after another he improved his position, with conditions slightly improving over the course of the race. On the last lap he finally got past Chevrolet’s Alain Menu (CH), shortly afterwards crossing the line in eighth. Zanardi was on his way into the top-ten, when he spun following a collision and dropped from 12th to 18th. Ultimately the 43-year-old had to make do with finishing 15th. At the front Müller increased the pressure on Priaulx in the final phase of the race. But the triple world champion successfully defended his position and finished 0.484 seconds ahead of his fellow BMW driver.

The drivers again faced slippery and wet conditions in race two. Farfus got off well from pole position and kept the lead. Behind him several collisions and off-track moments happened. Müller was also involved in this. He had improved to second at the start, but then slipped out into the gravel and hit another car in the process. The German received a drive-through penalty for this incident on lap 9. Priaulx, however, made an excellent start, kept out of all the trouble and shot from eighth to second.

While Zanardi dropped to the back of the field his team-mate Hernández worked his way up from 26th on the grid. His chase came to a halt in 12th. Müller finished 17th, while Zanardi took the chequered flag in 18th. Despite the difficult conditions neither Farfus nor Priaulx committed a single mistake at the front, bringing home the second BMW one-two of the day. After 14 laps the two drivers were separated by 0.761 seconds.

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“We had a good start to the weekend and looked really strong in dry conditions. The rain, however, made it all a bit more complicated. That’s why I’m really happy now that I scored another win and that BMW was able to reduce the gap in the manufacturers’ standings. We are in the middle of the title fight when we go to Macau. In the first race I unfortunately made a mistake in turn 2, which cost me dearly. Race two went according to plan, although it was really difficult out there. As the leader you are always the first hitting standing water or aquaplaning.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“The first race was tough. There was standing water in turn 2, and it was far from easy to keep the car on the track. When Gabriele Tarquini went off after the start, I almost followed him into the gravel. But all went well. Jörg Müller drove a strong race behind me, and he was always in my mirrors. Had the race been one lap longer, he might have overtaken me. The fight was good fun, but I must admit I was happy when it was over. Making it to the podium in race two again is just great. It’s nice to see how competitive we are towards the end of the season.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I was hit hard right at the start of race one. I was afraid that my car had been damaged. But for once I was lucky and was able to go on pushing. For the entire race I was driving in the spray from Andy Priaulx, so the visibility was poor. On the final laps I saw my chance to pass him, but I couldn’t get by. Race two was virtually over for me after the accident at the start.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“My disappointment at this – at least for our team – frustrating weekend could be bigger as it became clear quite early on that we would have problems here. In the first corner someone bumped into me, but even without this incident my speed would not have been good enough to make it into the points. My car was clearly better in the second race, but still not good enough.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I’m disappointed with my weekend. At no point were we as quick as we had hoped to be. At least BMW is now back in the title fight. With a bit of luck Augusto can make it in Macau. I will support him, wherever I can.”
