Does anyone have any more information on the M635 Motorsport Edition. This was a limited edition of 23 cars for the UK, the text below is taken from the excellent BMW M Registry web site. I checked with BMW and they confirmed it existed but it seems the only thing limited about it was the 3 special colour and trim combinations and ///M stripes on the seats. Everything else was an option anyway.

I'm particularly interested in how many of each colour were made.

Were there any special editions of the M635CSi/M6?
There were no official special editions of the E24 M635CSi or M6. However, BMW of Great Britain offered an unofficial "Motorsport Edition" of the right-hand drive M635CSi in three special color and trim combinations: Misano Red (236) with Black Nappa Highline leather upholstery, Nogaro Silver metallic (243) with Black Nappa Highline leather upholstery and Macao Blue metallic (250) with Lotus White Nappa Highline leather upholstery. Produced in one consecutive batch of 23 examples between October of 1988 and January of 1989, the "Motorsport Edition" included all of the standard UK M635CSi equipment, plus Shadowline exterior trim and M stripe lapels on the front and rear seats. (Note: Production of the standard RHD M635CSi then resumed for one additional month.)

a bit late with the reply

as far as i'm aware, no m635csi motorposts were made as an M635csi is a motorsport car as it is, BUT there were "motorsport edition" 635csi's made, and they were in the 3 colours mentioned in that text.

Hi
Here are the correct details for the M635 Motosport.  Yes it was a UK option and only 21 cars were made.  See list below.

Ross, here are some I know about:

475 is in Slough. Was for sale earlier in year, might still be. Its stood for a while. Owner is/was called Mohamed
477 was for sale in Portsmouth last year. Now sold to Midlands (?). Stored outside and hence a little rusty.
480 I own this one
483 is on M Registry as belonging to 'Phil D'
484 is now in New Zealand

There was a really nice, low milage red one at a Big Coupe meeting last summer, but can't remember its number. I'll try and find it.

479 is apparently not a 'Motorsport Edition' as it doesn't have motorsport paint. So there are 20 in total.

Can the club office tell us how many of these cars belong to members?

The link to M Registry is below, others might wish to register their cars:

Cheers, Richard

Were there also a number of autos that were given an official  M badge and described as "Motorsport" editions - possibly in Macau Blue?

I think I recall them being described as "635 Motorsport". Probably just another one of those things you hear from time to time that turns out to be total myth.

No myth, the UK option code is '129 Motorsport Edition'.

There were Motorsport Editions for both the M635 and 635CSi. There were 20 M635 Motorsport Editions (as listed above) and a much larger number of 635CSi Motorsport Editions.

If you have an M635 or 635 from late '88 to early '89 with option code 129 you have a Motorsport Edition.

More is known about the 635CSi Motorsport Edition, what is unclear is what is special about the 20 M635CSi Motorsport Editions. They were equipped with all the usual UK optional equipment such as Shadowline, Highline equipment, Tinted screen, rear window blind, A/C, etc, etc. (but not heated seats). But all these were options on non-Motorsport M635s. What was unique on the Motorsports was the tri-colour ///M seat labels on the front and rear seats and the three special Motorsport colour and trim combinations they were offered in.

Additionally, an article in BMW Car magazine June 2001 said the M635 Motorasport Editions had increased hp to 292bhp and others say they has stiffer suspension. Anyone know for certain?

Since you clearly know great deal about 6s, here are a few more questions:-

On the (non-Motorsport) Highline 635CSi models were the options confined only to the following:

1 sports seats
2 heated seats
3 cruise control
4 shadowline trim
5 limited slip diff
6 metallic paint
7 m-tech steering wheel
8 factory alarm

Am I right in thinking that none of the UK RHD cars were supplied with a catalyst?

At what point were Highlines supplied with the full-sized spare wheel (my Dec '87 car has the smaller 390mm metric rim/tyre as the spare) ?
