BMW driver Augusto Farfus claims pole position in Brands Hatch.

07-26-2008 Press Release

Brands Hatch, 26th July 2008. Augusto Farfus (BR) secured pole position in qualifying for round 13 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. At the “Brands Hatch Circuit” the BMW Team Germany driver set the fastest lap time with 1:32.794 minutes, thus relegating Chevrolet’s Alain Menu (CH) to second with a gap of just two thousandths of a second. Andy Priaulx (GB) was fourth with a time of 1:33.307 minutes while Farfus’ team-mate, Jörg Müller (DE), was fifth quickest ahead of Sunday’s first race. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) finished eighth for BMW Team Italy-Spain. His team-mate Félix Porteiro (ES) had to make do with 15th after being stranded in the gravel on his final lap.

“Since the Estoril weekend we have done a very good job,” said Farfus following the 30-minute qualifying session. “This effort paid off today. My car behaved fantastically. Big thanks go to BMW and the team, who obviously have a great share in this success. Alain Menu and I fought hard for the top position in the practice sessions, and now I’m happy I emerged as pole-sitter – even if it was by a very small margin. Tomorrow I will do my best to defend the lead in the first corner and then quickly find my own rhythm.” As early as his first “flying” lap Farfus was quickest. On his second attempt, 12 minutes before the end of the session, he succeeded in improving by another 0.276 seconds. When his main rivals for pole went out for their final runs, Farfus and BMW Team Germany watched the on track action carefully. After Menu failed to beat the 24-year-old’s time, Farfus didn’t need to do another flyer so saved a fresh set of tyres.

An hour before the start of qualifying it was Priaulx who provided the first highlight of the weekend. He went on track behind the wheel of a BMW Sauber F1 Team race car and completed a total of five laps of the 3.703-kilometre circuit. “That was the most amazing experience,” said the triple World Touring Car Champion. “It gives you a lot of respect for those guys who drove Formula One races here in the eighties – they were really brave. This car does everything better than any other sort of car. The engine performance is really quick and the grip is just phenomenal. For me it is weird to drive two so different cars in such a small space of time. I hope I entertained the fans here today. Augusto did a truly special lap in qualifying. My own result was better than we had expected.” On Sunday Priaulx will thrill the British fans again at 15:30hrs local time, when he goes out a second time in the F1 car. On Thursday Priaulx used the run up to his home event to launch his new autobiography.

Jörg Müller celebrates maiden win of the season in Brands Hatch.

07-27-2008 Press Release

Brands Hatch, 27th July 2008. Jörg Müller (DE) claimed victory in the 13th round of the 2008 FIA World Touring Car Championship. At the “Brands Hatch Circuit”, the BMW Team Germany driver won ahead of SEAT’s Yvan Muller (FR). Andy Priaulx (GB) crossed the line in third for BMW Team UK, scoring his fifth podium finish of the year. The BMW Team Italy-Spain drivers, Alessandro Zanardi (IT) and Félix Porteiro (ES), rounded off the strong result for BMW with fourth and sixth respectively. Müller’s team-mate Augusto Farfus (BR), however, retired following an accident on the first lap.

In the second race of the day, Porteiro and Zanardi represented BMW on the podium after finishing second and third behind Chevrolet’s Alain Menu (CH). Müller was fourth, while Farfus made up a total of 18 places and finished sixth. Priaulx was forced to retire with a puncture. Nevertheless, the reigning champion moved up to third in the Drivers’ Championship. He is the best-placed BMW driver on 49 points. In the manufacturers’ classification, BMW gained some ground on SEAT and has 165 points to its tally.

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“Normally I don’t have to wait until the second half of the season to score my maiden win of the year. Obviously I’m very happy now that I have made it. The team gave me a superb car. Now I will do my best to repeat this performance at the next race weekend in Oschersleben, in front of my home crowd.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“Third in race one is a good result. My car was perfect today. However, it was virtually impossible to pass Yvan Muller. I was set to give the British fans something to cheer about in the second race, too. But there is not much you can do with a puncture.”

Félix Porteiro (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I never reckoned I would be in the position to score another podium result here. At the beginning of the weekend we were nowhere. But from one session to the next we found improvements. In the early stages of race two Alain Menu was just too quick, but over the course of the race I closed in on him. This proves we have a good pace.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“This has been a fantastic weekend for us. We have changed our car a lot since Friday – and obviously we absolutely hit the mark with the set-up for the two races. In some situations we were a bit lucky. But in racing you just have to work hard enough and the luck plays into your hands.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“Once again I was only able to show how good our car really is in the second race. I was pushed out of the first race and was forced to fight my way back up the field in the second race. It is frustrating we just cannot be rewarded for all our work.”

Carl
Thanks for the comment on pics.
Just a shame Andy had to pull out of race two due to puncture again at the british round of championship.

Maybe Bart should get some Ultraseal put in Andys tyres, a billion miles for greyline coaches a year without punctures says --worth a try--
