![]() Topic: Vibration under harsh brakingPosted: 16 Jul 2008 at 10:49am |
|
Hi,
A friend of mine has an M6 and is experiencing vibration, transmitted through the steering wheel under harsh braking. The car still appears to brake straight.
Has anyone experienced this before? I had a similiar issue resulting from warped discs on an M535i years ago, but the vibration was not as significant as this......is this pointing to steering linkages?
Hope someone can help,
Cheers, James

It could simply be a lose wheel believe it or not, tell him to check all the wheel nuts on the front wheels are tight. Good luck..........

Cheers Nick,
Will do. The car is pampered so I doubt it is that, but worth a try.

It's either the discs or more likely the front control arm bushes.
The sixes suffer from a front end shimmey. Wide wheels make things worse. This is because they were originally designed with 14" wheels in mind and the later highlines and cars with wider than standard wheels just put more pressure on the control arms then they can handle so they wear out faster. Don't worry they are not too exspensive and when mine went i replaced mine with some uprated arms purchased from the US. James |

Hello mate, as James has said possibly the Discs but almost certinally the upper or lower control arm bushes. I had the same and changed my control arms and the problem went away

Thanks James and Ron for the advice. Is it worth fitting polybushes at the time of replacement too then?
The reason I'm asking is that I might end up buying the car if he sells it, and will probably upgrade the metrics to imperial 8 series cross spokes, or something similar, so would want a bush that can handle that.
Thanks,
James |

I would suggest fitting either new bushes which if fitted correctly should get you 20-30k of trouble free motoring or uprated bushes which i sourced from the USA. These are not poly, but a harder density rubber. The problem with poly bushes is that it makes the ride harsher and i have heard of a pretty solid polybush being fitted to an e28 M5 and a contol arm bending.

Hi
Having had a similar problem still , after doing all the above changes. Mine was play in the steering box when in the central position. It was simply fixed by my BMW dealer by adjusting the slack. Regards Ross |

Don't know if this will be any use with all the talk of bushes etc. but, my M6 suffered from this problem for quite a while and, the discs were replaced by my then BMW dealerabout 3 or 4 times. Often the discs didn't last the BMW warranty period. I overcame the problem by replacing the discs with drilled and grooved Black Diamond discs. Slight noise under heavy braking but the problem has never returned. Hope this helps!

The other thing is to retain you existing arms, and as long as the balljoints are okay, fit E32 750i bushes.
